As a stevedoring company, we specialise in the proper loading and unloading of ro-ro ships. This activity plays a central role in preventing damage to the cargo during transport and risks to the ship's stability. RoRo ships (roll on roll off) are ships that transport movable goods using the RoRo method. This means that the cargo is driven onto or off the ships. In addition to self-propelled or rollable units such as cars, lorries, tractors, construction machinery and rail vehicles, heavy goods (breakbulk) are also stowed and loaded onto trailers. As a specialist for RoRo ships, we ensure that vehicles, machinery and heavy goods are loaded on board safely and efficiently - and unloaded just as reliably. Our services at a glance:

Our experienced stevedores and lashers typically ensure the following processes:
  • Check the load for damage before loading.
  • Monitoring and coordinating the loading of cargo units.
  • Ensure that the cargo units are properly driven into the ship's decks.
  • Proper lashing and securing of vehicles and cargo units using lashing straps, chains or wire ropes to prevent slippage or damage during the voyage.
  • Observance of the order in which vehicles must be loaded or unloaded to enable efficient processes.
  • Close coordination with shipping companies / captains and other crew members as well as terminal operators to ensure a smooth loading and unloading process.
  • Compliance with safety regulations, especially when handling heavy equipment and vehicles.
  • Monitoring of work areas to minimise accidents or hazards.

The Core Business

The core business of Carl Tiedemann is the standardized stevedoring in the RoRo area (roll-on-roll-off). With our know-how, which has a long tradition, we always have an eye on the complex regulations of standardized stevedoring and can act quickly and flexibly. By regularly attending training courses, we always keep up to date.

Stevedoring steps

After the cargo has been stowed in the allocated space, it must be lashed securely, taking into account weight and sea conditions. First of all, the containers are put together with so-called twist locks. This creates coherent blocks that form a unit with the ship. Another securing is done with lashing rods, which are tightened in tensioning screws and are thus connected again to the ship. In this way, up to 3 layers can be secured. When unloading, the cargo must be released from the ship in reverse order. For example, the steel benches with which the containers are secured must be loosened individually with a rod. Although a lot has been automated in modern container terminals today and can be operated via computer control, the lashing job is actually still done with pure muscle strength.
The loading officer checks the secured cargo before departure. With his signature he confirms the proper lashing of the cargo.

What does Stevedoring mean?

Tausende Container kann ein Schiff transportieren. Dafür, dass diese während der Fahrt nicht verrutschen, ist der Lascher verantwortlich. Die Tätigkeit des Laschens bezeichnet das seemännische Verzurren von Ladung aller Art und in alle Richtungen auf Frachtschiffen.
Von der Qualität der Lascharbeiten hängt nicht nur die Sicherheit der Ladung ab, sondern auch die der Besatzung, denn bei starkem Seegang könnte ein Schiff mit unsachgemäß verstauter Ladung im schlimmsten Fall kentern.
Heute wird fast nur noch standardisiert gelascht, da dies die zeiteffizienteste Methode ist.
Während bei der konventionellen Lascherei das Können und der Einfallsreichtum des Laschers gefordert ist, unterliegt das standardisierte Laschen genau festgelegten Vorschriften. Beispielsweise werden bei der Verladung von PKWs vom Hersteller Richtlinien bestimmt, die vorgeben, wie viel Platz zwischen den Fahrzeugen eingehalten werden muß oder wie viele Gurte benutzt werden müssen.
