History

The Carl Tiedemann company was founded in Hamburg in 1879 as a typical port service provider. At that time it was common for the Hamburg tugs to drive towards the ships on the Elbe to offer them their services. And whoever came first had the best chance. With experienced staff - not the usual day laborers - Carl Tiedemann was often the first to offer the captains not only towing assistance but also stevedoring services, such as: B. loading and unloading and sorting, packing and delivering the cargo at the quay.

Even before the First World War, business activities were divided into two companies: the stevedore business continues under "Carl Tiedemann", while towing assistance is carried out in the "Fairplay shipping company", which is still successfully operating in the port of Hamburg to this day.

However, two world wars brought Carl Tiedemann's business to a standstill. But after each collapse, the heirs manage to rebuild the company. At the beginning of the 1950s, more than 70 employees were permanently employed. In the years that followed, new technological developments increased the speed of turnover. The Tiedemänner, as they are called in the Port of Hamburg, are accompanying the boom with innovative ideas. In this way, our own workshops are set up to manufacture suitable cover dishes. Carl Tiedemann is also early on in the containerization process. In the 1970s, the company opened the first container repair plant in the port of Hamburg. Container depots and packing stations follow. Despite this additional mainstay, stevedoring is still one of the core competencies that was expanded even further in the 80s. During this time, over 1,000 employees worked for Carl Tiedemann.

The next setback in 2017: the 138-year tradition in the port of Hamburg was about to end, the company had to file for bankruptcy. This was followed by a multi-month reorganization of the family business and finally the takeover by Dylewitz Verwaltungsgesellschaft, behind which the managing directors Jochen and Mathias Dylewitz of Hamburger Lasch GmbH stand.

Today, the traditional company with around 330 employees in the stowage and lashing operation is the largest provider of conventional and standardized ship loading and unloading in Hamburg.

For the future of the company, Managing Director Mathias Dylewitz hopes that everything will continue to go as well as it is currently.
